According to data from the city of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has used over $200 million in taxpayer money to settle civil rights claims.

Since 2009, the department has settled 265 cases in which the officer was found to violate someone’s civil rights, making it the most frequently made claim.

Civil rights claims recently peaked at 37 cases in 2013 but have since declined.

Despite its frequency, civil rights claims against the LAPD have been relatively inexpensive. On average, the payout for civil rights claims is approximately $5,000, with the highest payout at over $1 million.

In its recent history, the most expensive case that the LAPD faced was for false imprisonment over a wrongful murder conviction in 2013, costing the department over $16 million. In total, the LAPD has had 1130 claims made against it which have cost over half a billion dollars since 2009.
